Fillings Q & A

What is a filling?

A filling is a procedure Dr. Peterkin uses to fill a hole in your tooth’s enamel. Fillings are most commonly performed in order to treat tooth decay. “Filling” refers both to the material used to fill the hole and to the procedure itself.

What is a cavity?

A cavity is a hole in your enamel or the hard outer layer of your tooth.

Cavities are typically caused by tooth decay. This happens when your brushing or flossing is lacking, and plaque is left to build upon the surface of your teeth.

Plaque contains bacteria and acids that eat away at your enamel. The longer plaque is left to sit on your enamel, the bigger a hole, or cavity, it creates.

What is involved in getting a filling?

When you get a filling, Dr. Peterkin first numbs your tooth and the surrounding tissue with a local anesthetic. Then, she uses a small drill, laser, or air abrasion instrument to dig out all of the decay in your cavity.

Once your enamel is free of decay, she cleans and sterilizes the hole before filling it with a tooth-colored filling material. She shines a special curing light on the material to harden it, and then shaves off any excess material to properly shape your tooth.

You leave her office with an instantly restored tooth and a healthier smile free of decay.

What are fillings made from?

There are a variety of materials used for fillings, like cast gold and silver amalgam, each of which has particular advantages and disadvantages.

Dr. Peterkin prefers using tooth-colored composites with her patients at Breton Family Dental. Tooth-colored composite is a strong and durable material for fillings that keep your teeth healthy and free of further decay while also offering a massive cosmetic advantage by blending in with the rest of your smile. With tooth-colored composites, you can treat your cavities without having to ruin the beauty of your smile.
